an inspiring place for arts and thought

In “a landscape located at the world’s end”  in Provence, the Fondation des Treilles was created by Anne Gruner-Schlumberger (1905-1993). It is a place that promotes dialogue between creators and researchers.

Covering nearly 300 hectares, the estate is made up of forests and landscapes remodeled by Henri Fisch, while perpetuating a tradition of agricultural activities: cultivation of olive, vine, lavender and beekeeping. 15 guest houses, either built by Pierre Barbe or renovated old hovels, dot the estate.

Conceived by its founder as an “instrument” at the service of research and the arts, since 1981 the foundation has been hosting international high-level research teams in all fields of science, literature and the arts in seminars and interdisciplinary workshops and residencies.

In a quiet and isolated place, conducive to inspiration, it welcomes writers in residence (since 2008), photographers (since 2011), and young lyric singers attending a Master Class : the Voice Academy (since 2017).

In 2008, the André Gide – Jean Schlumberger Centre for Literary Studies was also created. It is dedicated to studying the movement of letters, sciences and arts of the first half of the twentieth century. An annual prize is awarded and researchers are hosted at the Foundation.

To support research in the making, the foundation also awards a “young researcher prize” each year to doctoral students.

In addition, the Fondation des Treilles’ art collection is available through traveling exhibitions in France and abroad.
